The fiber optic Displacement Sensor is a short range displacement gauge which measures the mutual position between two fixed points. It is based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. The standard gauge range is 0 to 50 mm and can be modified upon request. The sensor has connectors on both ends and can be used alone or in series as a part of a various FBG sensor array. Installation and cabling for such arrays is much less expensive and less cumbersome than comparable electronic gauge networks.


The Displacement Sensor is the fiber optic equivalent of a potentiometric, inductive or capacitive displacement gauges and can be mounted directly on the surface of a monitored structure.

The Displacement Sensor features high accuracy and resolution, and immunity to electric sparks and EMI/RFI. It is suitable for remote sensing and it is possible to install it kilometers away from the measurement unit. It is protected against water guaranteeing the IP67 protection degree.

Applications

The fiber optic Displacement Sensor can be used for the measurement of position changes of fixed points on structures (due to tension, compression and bending). This allows for the continuous structural health monitoring of structures, displacement or undesired deformation in (concrete) walls, bridges, buildings, ships, etc. The sensor can also be used for monitoring of illegal access or vandalism at various facilities. Electrical power is not necessary on-site, an interrogator can be placed tens of kilometers away.
